Has buying the right studio lighting setup stopped you from taking your portrait photography seriously? It shouldn’t. You can take great portraits with natural light.

Photography is about light. Learning how to see light is essential to developing your photographic eye. When taking pictures, being able to determine the intensity, color and direction of the light will help you know how to position your subject and which camera settings to use.

Take a look at your DSLR camera strap. If you are using the strap that came with your camera, you might notice a little piece of plastic or rubber on one side of the strap. Have you ever wondered what that was for? (If the answer is “No” then it might still be sitting your camera box!)

That device serves a simple purpose that I’d guess 95% of DSLR photographers never consider. Its sole purpose is to cover the eyepiece on your camera and most photographers have never used it, though it can be useful. Even without using that actual device, covering your eyepiece, when your face is not already covering it, can be helpful to gaining proper exposure.

I received an e-mail this morning that my photo “Mental Filament” had been sold to some wonderful person out there in the world. This is a first time sale for this photo and I have always liked the title and treatment I gave to it. Sometimes when you are deep in thought, you just want the “Mental Filament” or light to turn on.

Before using the lights for capturing the required effects and details, one should have a sound knowledge of the various features of lights. Check out the article on lighting and it’s features here. Let’s look at the various aspects of lights and technique of using the lights efficiently.

Silhouette photography is one style of generating creative results. The silhouette photography paves way for creativity using the light; by efficiently reversing the theory of exposure. A silhouette is a view of an object or scene consisting of the outline and a featureless interior, with the silhouetted object usually being black. The silhouetted effect is produced by throwing light from the background instead of lighting the subject from the foreground. I will attempt to explain here how to capture stars over a long exposure so that they leave behind a “trail” or light stream. In fact, what are recorded are stationary stars and the rotation of the earth. The images that are created have a unique magic about them that captivate viewers.
